Cottage/Area Details: The ground floor apartment is part of the 300yr old Tolpuddle Post Cottage, in the heart of the village close to the famous tree. Situated in the heart of Hardy country lies the delightful historic village of Tolpuddle (Tolchurch), home to the six Martyrs who met, it is said, under the tree and formed the farmer’s trade union in 1831. A museum in the village tells the story. 8 miles to the west is the market town of Dorchester which offers a number of sites to visit including Maumbury rings where the Gladiators fought in Roman times, the Iron-age earthworks of Maiden Castle. Museums include the County museum, Old Crown Court and Cells, The Keep, Dinosaur, Teddy bear and Tutankhamun museums. Local attractions include Athelhampton house and gardens, Lawrence of Arabia’s cottage, Thomas Hardy cottage, Tank museum, Monkey World, Blue Pool, Kingston Maurward, the golden sands of Weymouth, with Portland close by who are playing host to part of the 2012 Olympics. The Jurassic coastline is about 8 miles away. Villages of interest are Abbotsbury with its Swannery and Tropical gardens, Milton Abbas and Cern Abbas, plenty of Tearooms! Walks to Puddletown Forest are just to the back of Tolpuddle. Fishing, Horse riding and flood lit Golf can all be found locally.
